California probation using GPS to monitor offenders

"Calaveras County probation officers this summer are using upgraded electronic bracelets to track nonviolent criminals who wear them as an alternate way to serve jail sentences.

A recent test of the global positioning system technology showed it is extremely accurate. Probation officer Ben Leija put one of the bracelets on me at 11:05 a.m. July 14. Then I went home for lunch."
