Learn how to request police records on potential crime at nursing homes

State inspection reports on nursing homes can be detailed, but sometimes they don't mention serious assaults and safety breaches.

Citizens can determine if there have been recent allegations of crime at a facility by using Illinois' Freedom of Information Act to gather records from the local police department where it is located. Before you file a FOIA request, call the police department first to find out which official is in charge of records requests.

In some police departments such FOIA requests are handled by the chief. In others, it is a records division. Elsewhere, the FOIA requests are handled by a town clerk and not directly by the department.

Here is a sample letter that you can use to request police records about a nursing home.
